For Broccoli Content, a company focused on developing and distributing original programming, the music company entered into a joint venture with U.K.-based podcast producer Renay Richardson. Richardson is a producer who has worked for leading podcast platforms such as Acast, Audible and Panoply. Her credits are “About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge” and “The Receipts on 1xtra” from BBC Radio 1Xtra as an independent podcast producer.
Richardson created production shingle Broccoli Content (tagline: “Content that’s good for you”) in the summer of 2018, in response to the lack of opportunities for minority podcast talent both before and behind the microphone. The name is adopted by the current JV.
It’s Sony Music’s second podcast joint venture after teaming up with Adam Davidson and Laura Mayer earlier this year to form Three Uncanny Four Productions based in Brooklyn.
In a statement about the deal, Richardson said Sony Music shares her vision of building Broccoli Content as a place where passionate people with dynamite ideas can find a way into the industry and succeed. We will work together to create exciting podcasts from many types of voices and perspectives and help them find audiences around the world.
“Under Richardson’s leadership, Sony Music, London-based Broccoli Content is planning to develop a wide range of original scripted and unscripted podcasts.
The Broccoli team will also work with the creative division of 4th Floor Creative, Sony Music UK, to explore a range of “podcasting opportunities” from the UK. Market, supporting artists from Sony Music and talented podcasters.
